What is Probus ?
Probus Clubs are social clubs for retired professional, business and other people - the only stipulation being that you should be fully or semi-retired!
Although Probus Clubs have a World-Wide presence, each club is independently run, with no over-all "umbrella" organisation to control or administer individual clubs.
When were we founded ?
Saint Peter's Probus was founded in November 1992 from those on the waiting lists of Carmarthen Probus and Myrddin Probus, the other two Probus Clubs in Carmarthen.
The initial dozen soon grew steadily, and within a year membership reached a total of almost seventy.
Why the name Probus ?
The name Probus is derived from PROfessional and BUSinessmen.
Probus clubs provide a meeting point for retired and semi-retired professional and business men, for social and leisure activities.
In addition to the formal monthly meetings, the club holds various social events, to which the ladies are invited, including a Christmas Dinner, a Saint David's "Cawl” Evening and a "Draughts and Dominoes" event.
Social Events
Previously the Club has organised summer, late spring and early autumn "breaks" to places on the Continent such as Holland, Brittany, the Rhine Valley and in GB, Cornwall, the Peak District, the Lake District, Northumbria and, In Ireland, Killarney, Kilkenny and Dublin. However, due to increasing age and cost (?) we are finding it increasingly difficult to find sufficient support for these longer breaks - so we are now concentrating on day-tours which we usually run in mid-July, to places of interest - e.g. Bath, Bristol, Cardiff Bay, Abbey Cwm Hir, Glamorgan Heritage Coast, Gloucester, Cheltenham etc.
So we do get about a bit! (see next page)
Breaks and short breaks etc.
Those of an "athletic" turn involve themselves in bowls, golf, snooker and table tennis.
The "Trailblazers" usually manage a monthly walk (nothing too strenuous!) which usually starts with a coffee in a suitably located hostelry and, after the walk, ends with a "pub lunch" at the same hostelry!
